5 more days until Early Voting 💙❤️
Hey yall I know everyone has been asking so here’s a little about me and my goals!
My name is Kaitlyn Dale Hudgins and I am running for Mayor of Bayou Vista. I’ve lived in this community for 17 years, and for most of that time I was a kid watching from the sidelines and now I’m a grown woman who wants to step up in her community. I’m 29 years old, an overnight nurse at UTMB Galveston and have held many different leadership roles throughout my life. I was the Editor in Chief of my Yearbook class at Texas City High School, I was the ThinkPink Chair for my fraternity Zeta Tau Alpha, voted President of TNSA (Texas Nursing Students Association) active member of many clubs, and currently the Retention Champion for night shift at my job, I understand responsibilities and ready to take on those that come with being the Mayor.
The number one question I have been asked since starting this is “why did you want to run for mayor?” And my answer is very simple, the residents of Bayou Vista did not elect the current mayor into office, the Aldermen did and I believe that is a choice for the community to make not just a select group. I also believe no one should run unopposed, that removes the option for democracy.
Some of my goals as Mayor would be:
•Encourage of Police force to be vigilant in their duties and writing citations. After reviewing police activity transcripts, with traffic stops more warnings than citations are written, which in turn does not cover the court cost for the city. Less tickets being written equals less city the money brings in. Delivery services, independent contractors etc coming from outside of the neighborhood should be held accountable just like in every other city, you speed in anywhere else you get a citation no questions asked.
•Creating better transparency with the residents. I would ensure monthly financial and police reports are posted online for easy access to all residents, this was done in the past but has stopped. Why?
Along with transparency, creating a better template for monthly reports so they are easily read by residents. We shouldn’t have to have a calculator out to figure out what was spent every month.
•Continue to look into more grants and creating a budget for road repairs. We should not solely rely on grants or outside funding for road repairs, instead researching into creating our own yearly budget for road repairs.
•Work on refilling the landscaping gaps on Neptune with new oleanders.
•Create a Summer Festival where local vendors and food trucks can come out to sell their products and have fun free activities for the kids, this can be held at the basketball court set up the same way we do the cook off.
•Implement a “Meeting with the Mayor” day at least once a month, where I will set up at the community center for so many hours and residents can come and ask questions and bring concerns or ideas to me at their own leisure, without an audience and in a comfortable environment.
•Meet with other Mayors from surrounds cities like Tiki, Hitchcock, and Harbor Walk and brainstorm ideas together and also compare income vs expenses to see where we could be improving.
•Implementing events that recognize our Police, Fire, and City workers. Possibly host a dinner party type of event with raffles and auctions where residents are able to show our appreciation for their service to the city.
Thank you for taking the time to read, and hopefully support my journey of becoming Mayor of Bayou Vista. I love this community and I am ready to serve the residents here.
See ya at the polls! Remember early voting starts in 5 days 🎉
