Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is closing two southbound lanes of I-45 into Galveston, Texas, for a weekend project. As part of the ⁠ongoing I-45 expansion project, crews will close two southbound main lanes from FM 519 to Tiki Drive starting Saturday, August 8, at 9:00 PM until Monday, August 10, at 5:00 AM. Only one lane will remain open to traffic during this period.
The Cause: The lane closures are required to safely permanently shut down and dismantle the SH 146 westbound connector ramp to I-45 southbound. This makes room for future, widened main lanes. The Main Lane Impact: Only one southbound main lane will be open from Saturday night through early Monday morning.SH 146 Detour: Motorists trying to transition from SH 146 to southbound I-45 will be rerouted to use a ⁠new U-turn lane near SH 6 to access I-45 southbound, or alternate detours via I-45 Northbound to FM 519.Future Travel: Following this weekend work, TxDOT will shift the permanent traffic flow of the main lanes onto the southbound frontage road south of SH 6.
