"...the Hamster had chewed it through..." "...frigging great rats..."
In the mid-1970s I attended my first-ever rally, which took place at the Chasewater Leisure Centre in Staffordshire. After that weekend I used to stare at the place with a sense of near-resentment when riding past on the A5, as it was at this venue that my obsession began with the most lunatic and pointless of motorcycle activities. (I've done over 500 now).
One one occasion I was returning from a rally in Leicestershire when I noticed that the complex's main building had been reduced to a burnt-out shell. The culprit, as it turned out, had been a rat, which had gnawed through an electric cable and caused a fire which gutted the place.
I'm not aware of the subsequent fate of said rodent, but I do know that the facility - now known as Chasewater Country Park - has been extended and rather impressively rebuilt; it now includes such attractions as a bang-up-to-date watersports centre and a heritage railway. However, it has had to be relocated from its original site which is now occupied by a stretch of the M6 (Toll) road.
