Several factors, I suspect:
1) Gas is cheap here and very few thieving yabbos ride bikes - you're on camera and no sense having the cops track you down for $2.92.
2) Much lower levels of property crime here than there, and the cops WILL try to find you and nick you.
3) Most riders in the UK wear better helmets than over here (although maybe the thieves don't) ... Many here just wear tiny plastic beanies, you can barely tell they have a helmet on.
First thing I do when I stop the bike is take off the helmet. Mine are modular, don't need to take off the glasses, and I can't remember the last time I had to actually get off the bike to pay for fuel. It's only if I want a Coke or a snack that I go into the store, and I never go in with a helmet.
So it's interesting reading about, but no local application ...
