The model the club have used for a long while is based around having a head office with salaried staff. In the current environment it makes more sense to outsource some of the day to day tasks, such as renewals and the like, meaning fewer staff are required. Looking at the last set of published accounts itís obvious the club is living slightly beyond its means and as a consequence everything is under review.
On a personal level Iíd be all for closing AH completely and for the VMCC to run as a federation of regional groups. Each group would have some of the club bikes for people to use as well as a more focussed approach to event promotions etc.
Times change and at last, the board have decided to get on with those changes required. Something like the 1000 bikes costs the club around 100k to stage, yet usually loses money. It seems to me to only make sense if it acts as a wonderful promotional tool for the club rather than just being a track day. It would need to make wholesale changes before it would receive my support. Banbury? Average event and far too expensive for what it provides. Our GIANTS run fro girder bikes is a better experience and costs six quid; AND the thank you present this year is a bottle of bespoke- labelled craft cider. Banbury last year was £47, no wonder the board felt the need for a review.
AH currently seemed to exist only to make money in any way possible to perpetuate AH. That needs to change. Good on the board for grasping the nettle. The club is becoming more active online and has coordinated a united response from other motorcycling organisations, such as MAG and the TRF. Itís making some real progress and is still the best club to be a part of if you like properly old motorcycles and enjoy riding all around the country. Personally, I find the one make clubs ( Iím in several) rather dull; who wants to ride a Gold Star in a group of other gold stars?
Iíve no doubt the VMCC membership will shrink but Iíd rather have fewer, more active members, that a large nominal number of keyboard riders.
