As part of the N coast 500 it's now a lot busier, plus the cyclists have found it and use it as the hill climb challenge. It might be best to time it for a sunrise trip if you want an empty road.
My favourite area is south of there, Strontian is a delight and in the sweet spot of far enough away to be less visited yet not so far north that it becomes a tourist "destination" like Applecross and parts of Skye. I'd also recommend a trip to Ardnamurchan, just to say you have been further west on the British mainland than Lands End.
