First class post is segregated from second class post at the initial stage of processing, and then it's processed through the late shift to be despatched to the receiving office usually by 8.30pm in the provinces and 9pm or so in London. It then travels overnight to it's destination where it's delivered the following morning...or afternoon or even early evening.
The second class post receives the same processing but on the following morning's early shift, when it's then despatched early on the that day's late shift for delivery some time over the next day or two. Second class post was designed for those customers (particularly businesses with bulk postings) where cost is more important than next day delivery.
