Fay and I, when we were newly married, were looking for a "starter house". There was one in a rural town, a big old Victorian mansion with turrets and balconies. It had HUGE windows, with single-pane glass in them, high ceilings ...
... and when I went down into the basement, I thought I was going into the engine room of the battleship USS Missouri. A gigantic boiler, pipes everywhere, and an 1100 gallon fuel oil tank to feed it.
The house and 17 acres was only $50,000 (in 1980), but we'd have either gone broke or frozen to death in that place. There would have been no way to heat it economically.
