Mono grade is the viscosity stated yes it thins if hot and thickens when cold hence the grades for summer and winter Multi grade is a viscosity that covers all temperatures within that range and is a thin grade that doesn't alter with temperature So its a do all grade with cleansers added the original name was Viscostatic that meant the viscosity didn't change Designed for Car engine that were Water cooled it was in 1973 that Volkswagen said you could use Multi grade in your Engines but still advised monogrades.
My son uses multi in air-cooled Porsches they do have oil coolers but as in most flat engines they do burn oil..
