In the 80s I worked refurbing pubs. We regularly had to strip the nicotine stained walls.....then redecorate with faux-nicotine coloured paint. "Clean" walls were considered too bright and lacked the desired "ambience".
One place we even had to spray artificial cobwebs about to preserve the rundown tatty vibe the brewery wanted.
I expect soon these pubs will be "restored" again with vinyl banquette seating, formica topped tables and other 1960s details we trashed to "Victorianize" these pubs!
