What is the premium for a genuine important car, and how do you establish what is genuine, especially with competition stuff, everything likely to have been changed at some time.

How true! A car or bike with a long and glorious race history will probably not be very original. Conversely a very original one probably won't have a 'valuable' history other than being unmolested.
