Here in my little local 5-county area (maybe a circle 75 miles around the house) there was only one Indian tribe that spent any time here, and those were the Monacan Indians. They were centered in Amherst County, the next county north of mine (Appomattox). The last pure-blooded Monacan Indian died in the early part of the 20th century, but there are many of their descendants still living in Amherst County; they never did move away. Generally anyone named Branham, Hamilton, Hicks, or Johns in that area is part Indian.
This part of the state never had any other permanent Indian settlements. It was mainly a seasonal hunting and fishing area for folks "moving through"; any Indians trying to settle here were run out by the Iroquois to the north, there were pretty constant and bloody inter-tribal wars before the English settlers started moving west.
The Nottoway Indians used to have an encampment on an island in the Roanoke River about 100 miles southeast of here, but again they were conquered and run off before the English got here. The island is now underneath Kerr Lake since the 1930s ...
Anyway, that's the local story. Folks have written whole books!
