If you use fast charge which takes about 45 minutes just to get about 60% charge. The cost is much higher for the electricity.
The journey took 13 hours on an empty motorway and no waiting to get a charge point available as very few cars out this week. Conclusion was the car was suitable for a 120 mile journey. Now, this is a 40k cost car, so what is the advantage of owning a car with limited range, higher running cost and about a 5 year life. In 3 years that battery will only allow about 60 miles range. It might also require over 1 hour to get some power into it.
So far in the UK, i have not seen the giant size chargers that Norway has and it is still tedious sitting and waiting.
I bought a mild hybrid which is just 48 volts of battery power to boost acceleration by adding the battery power to the petrol. So far, i am getting 30 mpg compared to 42mpg from a diesel car of the same 200 bhp output. Figures by the maker suggest 42 mpg is normal but it is a tight motor being new.
Studying these electric cars with 400 volt power packs, i find they would be useless for my use as 400 mile journies in the Summer might be impractical with charging point waits.
If we have to start going electric, i think the PHEV , plug in with petrol engine might be the choice if you need to drive in the UK
What a con if the Government thinks electric cars will suit us all.
If you did get a home charger, it will need at least a 7 hour charge to get it part charged with a 7kw charging rate. Anyone here bought an electric car as an only car ? I doubt any owner would have just one car knowing that a 400 mile journey or holiday in the UK is a no go.
