Like MartynCB750, I actually owned a 1977 model back in 1980. I bought it with 80,000 miles already on it ... it was owned by a fireman in Richmond Virginia who lived in the fire station, on call, for a two week shift, then had two weeks off.
He was a likely young buck, and every Sunday when his two-week shift was done, he would ride his new GT750 down to Florida, about a 2000 mile round trip, and spend two weeks bird-dogging beach bunnies and whatever else a single 25-year-old with a pocketful of money and weeks at his disposal does. (Don't ask me; I can't even remember if I ever knew or not!)
At any rate, it had a Windjammer fairing, and even taking the rose-colored-glasses effect into account, it was a wonderful highway bike. He had the automatic oil injector turned down so that it barely smoked at all, and it got 1200 miles to a quart of injector oil; which means that if you were to change the oil in your four-stroke every 3,000 miles, this two-stroke bike used less oil than a four-stroke.
Plenty of power, and handled as good as I wanted it to.
Once it crossed 100,000 miles with no one having been in the motor, I traded it in on a new 1981 R65 Beemer.
But (subjective opinions about it being ugly or whatever notwithstanding) from a longevity, fun, reliability, and economy standpoint, it was a great bike. I'd have another one today if they weren't getting expensive faster than I could get the money in one place to pay for one ... !!
