They "notch" pigs' ears to identify them. When pigs were "free range" and wandered the woods and fields taking care of themselves, each owner had his "earmark" registered with the Clerk of Court, such as "two and two top of left ear, one right on bottom" or some such.

Even though they don't roam these days, they still ID them that way ....
