You can't stop them from stomping mud puddles; well, you could, but why would you want to? My 7-year-old granddaughter had on a pair of wellies, and there must have been 100 ice-covered puddles on the old road on which we were walking, 3+ miles.
She stomped EVERY ONE of them .... it's her favorite part of the walk!
