Years ago I lived in an isolated Greek village where there were three, if you counted Albania, black and white channels with bad reception. Saturday night was special as there was a foreign film, which you looked forward to and watched whatever it was. One Saturday there was a thunderstorm and therefore a power cut so in desperation I went out in the rain to remove the battery from my car to finish watching the film. That was how much tv was appreciated. In fact after one power cut the government was forced to rerun a popular soap.
There is also the sad lack of distinction now between different countries television channels, certainly in Europe. All the ruddy same franchises but in a different language. It used to be fascinating to watch the different programmes in my travels. Now you could be anywhere, except for the scantily clad top heavy Italian game show hostesses of course.
