It is a fine Line HB, you're quite right. A lot is down to individual predisposition too I think. My ex brother in law was a raging alcoholic, with all the classic symptoms of hiding bottles round the house etc. He even went as far as boiling the alcohol out of boot polish at one point. However, even before then, he could never hold his drink, being a complete pita after a couple of pints, and being totally unable to stop drinking once he had started.
However, I've known plenty of other people who the medical professionals would define as alcoholics, but who carried on completely normal lives, never missing a day's work or causing a problem in the pub and able to walk away from it at any time.
There have been times in my life when I've drunk far too much on a regular basis, particularly when I got divorced (about a gallon a night!). However, as soon as the situation changed, my drinking dropped back down to 'normal' for me of between 10 and 15 pints a week, with no conscious effort from me. Everybody's different I guess.
You don't have to be crazy to post here, but it helps....
