Geoff. Are you using an AC or DC welder? I am guessing that you are using quite a heavy current setting ie lots of amps. Current flowing through a conductor (in this case the work piece) will produce a magnetic field around it which will give rise to an effect known as "ark blow" which upsets the process. see <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_blow">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_blow</a>. Moving the "earth" clamp to a different place on the work can sometime help.
