I think back in the day rims were drilled Or punched for spoke holes then plated, these days stock plated rims are drilled/punched, so no protective plating through the holes, don't know why, but I believe that edges of things during plating were described as high current density areas, and plated at thicker rates, some times these areas were wired to slow this down and rob the excess plating from them as the high rate would not look good eg burnt /lumpy looking, somebody will know better. now lowering my head below the parapet.
