The chap we were mainly there to see/work with was an aged Engineer with dual Hungarian-USA citizenship.
Apparently, the CIA had recruited him after the 1956 uprising & had helped with his education & then given him a passport, on the quiet.
He had built a couple of VW conversions from dead Trabants for family, late 1970s, in a small factory. In the Soviet era, everyone was entitled to a job, so he had no problem recruiting workers.
After the 1989 collapse automatic state funded jobs disappeared & his brother kept the factory open, restoring Trabants & building Bitsas from scrapped/abandonned cars.
My colleague had moved into high level computer tech & advanced chip design, collaberating with UC Berkeley on a chip project I was involved with.
