First attempts often go like that. I have used a similar arc welder for over 40 years. Easy to weld up that thick metal, you just have to keep the arc going non stop until complete. I use mine to weld fuel tanks and that is very tricky. Just a tiny touch of arc like stitching it together. First attempts produced big holes but i have got it now.
I would use a 1.5 rod on that at 100 amps
