I never completely tighten the external nut on an inner tube valve but leave it with say 1/4" to go then if the tube creeps it's obvious because the valve start to 'lean over'.
Yes, I realise that some would say that if the valve nut is fully tightened the tube wouldn't creep/tear in the first place, but from my experience that's not so.
