Over the last 35yrs (I realise that's like having just passed my test to most of you!) I've actually owned more lovely bikes than I ever expected I might - the two Laverdas for example and the 1936 Triumph 5/1 were things I never thought would embellish a lowly teacher's garage; those are for high-earners - but I have zero interest now. In fact on my way home from Suffolk last week I came across a horrible bike accident and that just reinforced the feeling that I'm done.
It's been a bad year: illness, lost my dad etc, etc. All stuff that happens to everyone but it seems to have focused me much more on what I do and don't enjoy and I realised that the increasing rate of churn in the garage was a sign that I didn't really want any bike. I think I've known this for some years but carried on from habit. Then I realised I fettle a lot and barely ride them. Then I realised I prefer being outside than swearing at bikes from the garage floor!!
Still, we'll see if it lasts. My wife banned me from selling my gear so she is clearly of equally little faith! Time will tell!
