I quite like that. The futuristic idea is the engine can be off for the city areas as the GPS can tell it. Plus, a future comnected vehicle service may ask it to go electric in air quality hot spots for the sake of residents lungs. These hotspots may be the regular ones, satellite spotted ( ESA has this already) or modelled (NEVFMA in Oxford). Either way, the car uses the info to minimise its emissions when it really matters.
More realistically right now, rather than two motors of different characteristics driving the same drivetrain which has to add to complexity and cost, its one electric motor and drivetrain seperated by a battery from one petrol engine and generator. The engine can even be constant revs to be more efficient as it powers up the generator. The battery can be a lot smaller too as its not providing the range - less kids mining Cobalt n Congo has to be good
