The opinion of Travellers is easy to form, but not always correct. In my previous life I dealt with a few and had the stereotypical experience with the exception of one time I was the first Senior Officer on site. I sought out the elder and explained the situation, I also told him, I was aware that they had been on the road for a few hours and they needed to see to their kids, so I would give them some privacy to feed and clean the weans, then they had to leave. He thanked me and said they would. I offered him my hand and asked if I could have his word on that. He said yes, so I withdrew all officers to give them privacy.
My gaffer and a few others criticised me for this, and said I would regret it. Before the hour was up, the group left the area, and passed on their thanks via the Cop who was left at the bottom of the Rd.
Not saying it would have worked with every, or indeed any other group, but it worked for me and them on that occasion.
Aside: I used that as one of my examples in a promotion interview and was successful
