You're right - I've been living in my old history books.

From Napoleonic times until about 1950, when most of the world was on a sort of Gold Standard, the inviolable rule was:

Five francs to the dollar
Five dollars to the pound. But that all changed in the early 1950s, and by 1960 it was as you say; about half that rate ....
