I find Jerry's account entirely believable.
When I was a callow office boy at a Ford dealership in the early 1970s, the mechanics used to leave copies of "Mayfair" and "Penthouse" lying around with some (but by no means all) of the pages missing. The only picture from any of these publications I pinned up was an advert for the BMW R90S.
