He and Frost used to walk in Gloucestershire and Thomas's decision making on path junctions always led to them getting lost. Frost wrote the poem as a joke about this (at least he said so - you never knew with his dry sense of humour and afterwards he might well have wanted not to admit anything else). Thomas felt Frost was criticising him for wavering over signing up to fight. It's thought this poem made the decision for him. He died when a German shell just missed him. It failed to explode but passed so close it sucked the air from his lungs. His body was unmarked.
Thomas was a nasty chap - awful to his wife. Frost was an egoist but what a writer. Thomas's wife, long- suffering though she was, wrote a very poignant description of their life together. She was sure he would die and called to him as he crested each hill on his walk from their cottage to the station to go to war. She knew she'd never hear from him again.
Poetry: nasty stuff that can kill your mates! Of course, the 'road less travelled by' was no different to the other road, as you'll see if you read it carefully. Classic Frost: you've been being tricked all along.
