>Reason it was called slippery Sam was it leaked oil badly.
In a word, no.
The bike that became Slippery Sam was one of three '69 T150's rebuilt ine Meriden's Experimental Department for UK and European production racing in 1970. Amongst many other races, all three were entered in the 1970 Bol d'Or (the last year it was for production bikes) at Montlhéry in France.
Shortly before the beginning of the race, it was decided to swap the engines from Castrol R to GTX, that bike's engine wasn't cleaned out properly, the mixture of castor and mineral oils caused a sludge, that caused the engine to vent copious amounts of oil over the rear of the bike and the rider. One of the riders was Percy Tait, whose nickname at Meriden was "Sam The Transport Man", he became "Slippery Sam", quite how the name transferred from him to the bike is unclear.
But, apart from that one occasion, Slippery Sam the bike didn't leak oil (Les Williams would've been horrified if it had).
Hth.
