As for Trident, I'm not sure it will ever be fired in anger, as the last the final link in the chain, thank goodness, is the commander of the sub.
I remember the Polaris Nuke Fiasco. It consisted of missiles carried by custom designed subs. The first one out of Vickers Yard got stuck in the mud & Cammell Laird were having quite public arguments with US Navy about how to build a boat.
Test firings of Polaris went wrong so often that they were apparently downgraded to procedure rehearsals, so as not to report yet more failures.
When HMS Queen Elizabeth was commissioned in 2017, a Russian defence spokesman said it was a wonderful achievement, not least because it made a much bigger target than a normal ship. He also added that it would be rude to mention that it was an aircraft carrier with no airdraft.
The French navy has more ships than the Royal Navy.
