My early history in 1941 I contracted TB along with my brother brother older was put in a sanatorium myself kept at home around 1945 after Xrays they noticed the bones in my left wrist had hardly grown this limited the movement of my left hand I had special leather strap up splints made with soft leather inside and a metal strip underneath.. ( great for bashing anyone)
I had new ones made every six months.. each one moving the hand into a direction ..I had these until I was seventeen travelling to and from Stanmoor hospital and Bromton hospital in London
Early days mum with me the amount of work in those days was fantastic and always given encouragement by the doctors they even said it was OK to ride motorcycle as I did around our large garden when very young Mother was horrified but let me carry on .. I still have limited movement but if it wasn't for the health service way back then in the forties I wouldn't be as I am ..
I did race bikes with the splint but difficult to tuck that arm out of the way .
I also had no schooling until I was 13 years old as I was in an open air school for children with TB..
Just thought it might be of interest
My brother Philip survived only a lung and half.
And also keen motorcyclist and was an electronics engineer designer of guidance systems for most of the missiles including Blue Steel ..sadly no longer with us..
