Really ?
The magazines I was brought up on through the late '70s always had an issue on "preparing your bike for winter" which I seem to recall included greasing up brightwork & castings to deter corrosion.
I used to be able scrounge an industrial preservative called Shell Ensis fluid from work - it was used on the machined surfaces of the factory products to prevent corrosion in transit. It was a dark brown, waxy liquid that I applied with a paint brush (sprayed in the works) & it "dried" to a resiliant sticky coating. Washing over the winter was just a case of hosing off the worst of the crud & in spring the coating was removed with Jizer & elbow grease.
I later moved on to an aerosol clear wax product sold by BMW - sprayed over everything it too set to a resiliant coating but didn't make the bike look as manky as the Ensis & was easier to remove.
Today I use another technique - garage the bikes between the start of November & the end of March !
