That won't be a new one then, Will.
Reported in Motorrad, the new R1300GS has a "disposable" drive shaft that is a mandatory replacement item at (IIRC) 80,000 km (around 50K miles). Currently the driveshaft (part only - plus fitting) is €900. Makes a chain & sprocket kit @ £200 seem positively cheap !
I did once (briefly) consider one of the BMW F800 twins - the ST IIRC when it was current. I asked about the life & replacement costs for the belt drive system - the salesman said it was listed as replacement of belt & pulleys at the 24K miles service, with the parts cost at £700 ( 2 pulleys & 1 belt - had to be changed as a set) plus fitting. I didn't proceed any further & have not considered a BVMW since.
I changed the Interceptor 650 chain & sprockets at 12K miles - the chain had developed a tight section & the front sprocket was showing signs of wear, despite using a chain oiler (gear oil) from new. A pair of OEM sprockets + a DID X-ring chain came to under £100 & I fitted it at home (I have a chain splitter / rivit tool). Suprised the difference in made to the bike - much smoother overall & a slight handlebar vibration previously evident at around 50-55 mph was gone.
Shaft drive is great - until it needs work, then it gets decidedly spendy !
