All this low cost boiler and heat pump systems are really a load of crap as you may find when having to replace your combi boiler several times over 20 year period. You might be lucky and get away with 250 pound repair bills every 2 years. Keep an older boiler as long as you can. I installed mine about 1988 and it has needed 3 thermocouples and one thermostat costing a total of 35 pounds over all those years. It has no moving parts or valves, just a simple balanced flue cast iron unit.
The way to save energy is low cost lighting and A rated appliances. A lot of insulation including cavity wall and about 400mm fibreglass type insulation in the roof. Double glazing throughout and keep windows shut in Winter. I have very low running costs having done the work on it.
I laugh at the salesmen selling foam spray onto the underside of the roof making your house un mortgageable. Some have suggested that fibreglass is inefficient yet it is still the best available insulation.
A combi boiler will use about 25 percent less gas than a simple iron boiler but it will cost far more over 20 years for the repairs and replacement of the combi.
Solar installations typically take 25 years to get back the outlay and will have needed 2 replacement control boxes at least. My Nephews stopped installing the rubbish now after the Government payments that made them worth having.
I would agree that having all these suppliers has just made it all more complex and inneficient.
Water suppliers just offered to fix my pipes if they break for an annual premium so i asked them why they have been unable to fix their own 3 leaks outside of my house
