Slate house roofs around here used galvanised nails and mine lasted about 80 years. My new roof has copper nails as recent roofing using aluminium nails lasted about 5 years. Some great architects at work locally.
The RNLI is adding to the story saying they wanted to install more insulation in the roof to cover up for the error of using aluminium brackets. All housing wall ties now have to be stainless steels as the galvanised ones suffered corrosion leading to what they termed wall tie sickness and they drilled in new resin bonded ties into the old houses.
30 years ago, i fitted an aluminium scaffold pole into the ground at work supporting a small light. Later on, the gardener decided to rest a bag of road salt against it. That pole collapsed in 2 years.
Salt air is very strong here near the sea. Brake discs go orange overnight even half a mile away
