First was of course cost. Even bottom end mass market vehicles cost around £10,000 more than their petrol equivalent
Second was our old favourite...range. As we all know the range is always overstated and is based upon laboratory tests.
Third was depreciation. It appears that many electric cars at three or four years of age have become almost worthless and dealers are often not prepared to take them in part exchange.
Fourth and now becoming very significant is battery life and replacement cost. It beggars belief that replacement batteries can cost as much , and often, more than the vehicle is worth. Toyota Leaf was one of the quoted vehicles and replacement batteries cost £20,000+ to replace. Indeed to make matters worse the vehicle manufacturers were, and still are, pretty much refusing to let the price become common knowledge, it was reckoned that the labour cost alone to replace the batteries is something approaching £5,000. You have to bear this in mind when looking at life expectancy of the vehicle and in particular the batteries. Many now carry a 100,000 mile guarantee. Impressive? Not really as ant decent petrol/diesel engine that is serviced correctly will easily achieve 25,000 miles. Indeed when working I used to do beween 50K and 55K each year.
Finally battery life. The batteries used in EV's are just like any other battery, regardless of the rare metals used in manufacture, in that with time and use they lose power so at around 6 to 8 years they will normally have lost around 25% or more of their capacity and this will continue until they are Bo****ed. They also, like other batteries do not like low temperatures, so in a climate which suffers temperatures of 5 degrees C and lower battery degradation is inevitable. Does that sound like a country you all know. Indeed they recommend keeping your EV in a heated garage in winter!
So there are a few discussion points which I discovered reading the Mail yesterday. I thought that I would share it as I am the only person I know that admits to reading the Mail On Line. I like Top Gear as well. LOL.
Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.
