If they are lucky they can choose what specifications & colours they want but sometimes its what the factory decide they should have!
This initial stock usually sells out very quickly if the model is well anticipated or has had exceptional pre-launch publicity and positive press reviews. They may sell before they even get to the showroom.
The last time I bought a new Triumph I was given a choice of various specs & colours that the dealer knew they would be getting. As I was first in the queue I got exactly what I wanted straight away from their initial stock “allocation”, but after this there would have been a lead time for an order to be delivered from the factory.
Obviously popular in demand model have longer lead times and dealers almost compete for limited production time & shipping schedules to get orders fulfilled.
Recent examples of this are Triumphs’ latest Street Triple RS and the new 400 singles. The limited dealer stocks of both sold out almost immediately and were then only available to order with quite a long lead time until delivery. In contrast the base model Street Triple was available ex-stock.
Meanwhile less popular models like the Speed Triple RR are available instantly from stock (currently at significantly discounted prices!). Geoff may love his Thunderbird, but sales didn’t reflect his enthusiasm and it fell into that second category.
