I have a Scott oiler so only lube the chain manually if I adjust it, in which case I clean it too.
I use paraffin, an old toothbrush and a good rinse to wash away residue before lubing with gear oil.
I also do this if I am not riding the bike thru' winter.
But after decades of shaft drive bikes I was delighted to discover chain technology has advanced since ye good olde daze and chains last much better, stretch less and generally do not require hours of messy maintenance.
It also means sublime domestic harmony as I no longer melt tins of grease on the cooker
