Not many people have bought their cars for many years now - most rent them on PCP deals. The arrival of PCP deals effectively signalled that cars were too expensive for most people to be able to buy outright.
Re : Toyota battery location. IIRC my friend's Auris hybrid battery lived under the rear seat squab. My Hyundai i30 battery lives in what was the spare wheel well, so no spare wheel capbility now.
The Hyundai i30 mild hybrid system isn't as sophisticated as the Toyota version (but doesn't cost as much either), but I am still getting better consumption on petrol that I got from the diesel version of the same car that I had previously. Best so far (tank average over a full tank, two pax & a boot full of luggage) has been 62 mpg. I had a Toyota Aqua (JDM import) hybrid hire car in NZ earlier this year which consistently did high 60s mpg on petrol.
