Successfully appealing against a planning application is difficult & only specific considerations are taken into account. I put in a successful challenge to a large extension my immediate neighbour had applied for recently & I think in all probability I succeeded because I was "coached" on how to plead my case using a particular aspect (depravation of light) & using particular words and phases by the hsuband of one of my wife's former colleagues who happens to be a planning consultant. The rejection latter giving the reasons for the rejection highlighted all the areas and used the words & phases I was told to use.
While I am relieved that the project won't be going through (at least in it's propsed form - don't know yet if they will try again with a different scheme), I do feel for the neighbours - we had talked about what they wanted to do & why (2 teenage boys in a smallish 3 bed house & need more space) and I know that the rejection will cause them problems - but at the end of the day I have to consider my own interests too.
