Some years ago, driving, I happened to have Radio 2's stuffed-shirt Jeremy Vine on, the subject was speaking only English to foreigners in their country; one caller came on, said, "Even the Chinese understand English if you speak loudly enough while poking them with your umbrella." Not only was that funny, even more hilarious was Vine's woke huffing and puffing because his sense-of-humour bypass meant he didn't understand the joke ...
