I often think that brave departures from the imitation of the original are a better bet. The Himalayan seemed a good move but a bit gutless and very ugly. The Interceptor is very interesting - I've not had a chance to ride one but they do convey the impression of a nice looking bike that has a decent riding position without being trapped in the past - an update of a tried and tested vertical twin that has proved so practical over the years on English roads. Very interesting that they seem much more popular than the W650 was.
Retro bikes are odd things in my view. The Bonnie that I looked at when they first came out had the the same power to weight ratio as the T140. It was very lardy, I recall.
The Interceptor appears to have nothing but loyal fans - people in the club love them.
I guess the difference is between a bike that is genuine fun to ride with a hint of classic style and a bike that tries to look the part without adding something of a fun nature on the road. It must be especially difficult when you take a bike renowned for its discomfort and awkwardness to ride and sanitise it for delicate old farts to plod round on.
