Did we ever think that it was produced in America by an American company? Not a hope in hell. It was built in the ex Steyr Puch factory in Austria. Parent company? No idea it was simply a car my wife liked and so who am I to disagree with her.
Globalisation has much to answer for with product branding. We have seen Hondas built in Italy, Harley's built in India, the list is endless but nobody is fooled. In our case the global it's are simply trying to exploit a known brand name which, in the case of BSA and Triumph, is recognised even today on a global basis. Norton are still somewhat at odds with this trend as they are owned by TVS (from India) now being built in the UK and currently not available globally, but I expect that will change in the fullness of time.
Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.
