Here they've converted them all to LED units & they are dimmed overnight, but still give plenty of illumination for safety & security. A good compromise.
I remember the man with a pointy ladder climbing up and lighting the gas mantle at night & turning the gas off again in the morning.
It was also the norm to be taught to drive on sidelights at night to avoid dazzling other road users and to keep speeds down. I was reminded of this on Tuesday when I was dazzled by a high-powered LED on a bicycle!
