I suppose it's like anything else; some of them had loads of money, others just very single mindedly saved up their wages and bought the best they could.

If someone had taken a picture of me and my mates riding when we were 17, it would have been open face helmets with flat face shields, denim jackets, jeans, work boots, no gloves, and new 250 or 350 Hondas and Yamahas which cost $700 at a time when we were paid $2/hour, so 350 hours work to buy a bike, or 2-3 months.
