April sees a big change in taxation with charges if the car has a list price over 40k which mine will be. This time, EVs will have to pay road tax the same as petrol cars.
The future may be to buy an old low mileage diesel car without rust, then recondition all the brakes and steering parts and run that with its low road fund charge that they had back in about 2010 when a 2 litre diesel was 30 pound tax.
That has already started around here with older car owners coming in for anti corrosion spraying at the boys garage. He sand blasts any surface rust, welds any holes then treats the whole underside and these owners say it is to keep long term to avoid these high taxes.
A Range Rover new in 2025 will carry a charge of over 5000 pounds.
I might even just buy a luxury version of a small car which is what i have with the Toyota. That one is the Excel model but with a moon roof so top of the range at 37,000 pounds list price. I can see a lot of manufacturers just leaving out some of the silly extras to keep the cost under 40k. Right now, is a good time to buy an old good car.
