On one new car i bought in 2017, it had a setting for snow which reduced engine power until it just crawled along to stop wheelspin. It was a Nissan automatic diesel front wheel drive. What really happened in snow was power was so low, it would not go up any hill between Exeter and Exmouth. Lucky, there were 3 Royal Marines walking to the camp so they pushed me up one so i gave them a lift to the RM camp but they had to get out and push at each hill.
Very hard to find a car capable of driving in snow without 4wd but a 1.4 diesel peugeot 206 FWD was excellent and virtually no spin on packed ice and snow.
If you look at 60s rally cars like Saab 96, mini, and then the later Lancia stratos and Peugeots, you can see very thin tyres on the snow sections. I know they also have steel studs but for normal road cars ,narrow tyres work better as there is more weight bearing down on the smaller contact patch. Back in the 70s, we found Goodyear G800 to have a good snow grip. Quite large tread blocks on those. When using Pirelli Cinturatos, there was excellent dry grip and very poor wet or snow grip
