He was lucky that it was a split screen model with the removable rear panel to ease engine access. I got roped in to helping my former employer fit a Subaru engine / gearbox to a later Bay window Devon camper converetd van & access to that was dire as the rear of the van was fully welded construction. No sliding the engine in from behined through an open space, everthing had to be done from underneath with the van on a 4 post lift. His was a very late 1600 single carb model so didn't have the access hatch in the floor to gain access to the engine / carbs from above as manufactured, so it had one cut and the cover from a later van modified to fit. Fitting the Subaru engine without that access from above would have been almost impossible. Quite fancied a Type 2 at one point - working on one cured me of that ! Nigel B. |
