Well born and bred in London yes the smogs of the 50s 60s was bad I once went to the local pub to meet a friend it was on a junction of three roads all at different angles .. So I'm walking to the pub got to the junction could hear the noise from the pub but couldn't see it I was in the middle of the read but lost my bearings so shouted out and got a reply of Over there....didn't get home till two in the morning when the Smog lifted..
And yes had handkerchiefs tied over mouth and nose..My brother couldn't go out in those conditions as he had a collapsed lung due to TB which I had and sister during the war..
